UNCST commemorates International Year of Chemistry

Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST), in conjunction with Uganda Society of Professional Chemists (USPC) and Uganda Science Journalists’ Association (USJA), organized a symposium to commemorate the International Year of Chemistry – 2011, on Friday 2nd December 2011, at the Uganda Industrial Research Institute Conference Hall. The Year 2011 was designated International Year of Chemistry by the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 2008. 

As part of the commemoration, a symposium on Managing a Petroleum Economy and Climate Change was held on December 2, 2011 at the Uganda Industrial Research Conference Hall.

The purpose of the Symposium was to: foster improved understanding and appreciation of chemistry by the public; enhance cooperation and the dissemination of information among science and technology stakeholders, specifically the media practitioners; and promote the role of chemistry in contributing to solutions to national and global development challenges.

Honorable Maria Mutagamba, the Minister for Water and Environment represented by Mr. Lawrence Aribo, a Senior Programme Officer and Head of the Climate Change Unit in the Ministry of Water, Lands and Environment presided over the commemoration.

During the commemoration, the Hon. Minister launched the Uganda Society of Professional Chemists and the Annual Uganda Science Journalists’ Forum.
The symposium attracted participation from universities, research institutions, civil society, policy makers, media, professional scientific bodies and the general public. 
Discussions emphasized the role of chemistry in steering Uganda’s science and technology-led sustainable socio-economic development and transformation.
