UNCST MOVES TO MINISTRY FOR STI

July 12, 2016:KAMPALA- The Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) has officially moved  to the Ministry for Science, Technology and Innovation from the parent finance ministry. Hon. David Bahati the State Minister for Finance, Planning and Economic Development who has hitherto been the line minister responsible for the UNCST, passed on the instruments of power to Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye the Minister for Science, Technology, and Innovation in the Ministry in Kampala today.

Hon. Bahati congratulated the Dr. Elioda upon his re-election and the subsequent appointment as the first Minister for Science, Technology, and Innovation. Referring to UNCST as a core body, onto which to lay a firm foundation, Bahati requested  the Minister to expeditious have the UNCST Act revised to avoid clashing mandates.

The former minister then moved to introduce the UNCST Board to his counterpart, before handing over instruments of power.

Dr. Elioda showed conspicuous elation at the warm reception and pledged to maneuver the STI sector to greatness pointing out biotechnology, nanotechnology, et cetera, as crucial STI fields to focus on given their potential to spur industrialization. He pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessor, for example, the construction of the science parks, a project already in prospect and expanding on the innovation fund.

 

The UNCST will host the Ministry for STI, at the Science and Technology House in Ntinda.

Online Application System Launched

The Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) has introduced an online application platform for all those seeking to carry out research in the country. The new system was launched by Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye the Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation at the closure of the eighth Annual National Research Ethics Conference [ANREC], early July.

The online application process is not only user-friendly, but also a convenient tool for prospective researchers to fill on the go, and submit without trekking to the UNCST secretariat.

However, the research registration desk will continue receiving paper applications too.

At the same event, revised research guidelines were also unveiled.

A day earlier the Minister for the Presidency Hon. Mbayo Esther, who represented the Prime Minister, awarded  two Dons from Makerere University the National Bioethics Award. They are Dr. David Guwatudde and Dr. Fred Wabwire-Mangen. The winners  are both  associate professors of epidemiology. They were awarded for upholding their exceptional protection of human research participants Uganda and advancing bioethics for development.

Also present was the State Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Hon. David Bahati.
