Uganda Biodiversity Information Facility (UgaBIF)

Biodiversity informatics has become an important tool in facilitating education, research, product development, bio-resource management and conservation; and an important element in developing the country’s bio-resource potential. Nurturing a national bioinformatics platform is therefore, a necessary undertaking whose importance cannot be overemphasized in Sustainable development.  

 Biodiversity information is an integral part of environmental resources that provides a basis for sustainable environmental management planning, policy formulation and decision making. Development sectors related directly or indirectly to biodiversity are dependent on basic scientific data that are collected and collated to enable efficient achievement of objective planning.

The 2010 National Science Week
  
 As one of its strategies to promote Science & Technology, UNCST holds a National Science Week annually. On this note UNCST is pleased to inform you of the forthcoming 2010 National Science Week (NSW) which will be marked from 20th to 24th of September, 2010 in Gulu District.   The theme of the Week shall be, “Science, Technology and Innovation: Strategic Interventions for Prosperity for All”.  The NSW is intended to help the public understand the pivotal role of science and technology in the economic and social transformation of Uganda.  It is also a Week to reflect on scientific and technological achievements and assess overall progress towards strengthening Uganda’s science and technology capability.
 
The 2010  NSW will consist of a series of  events aimed at;
  • helping students understand and appreciate careers in science and technology
  • disseminating  research findings on key national development  issues
  • recognizing scientific and technological excellence and outstanding achievements of Ugandan Scientists
  • taking science to the general public.

Presidential Sceince Awards: Call for Nominations
  
 In pursuance of its mandate of promoting the development and application of science and technology for economic transformation of Uganda, Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) has the obligation to honor scientists and technologists through awards or presentations for outstanding achievements and contributions in the various fields of science and technology. The specific purpose of the
  1. To recognize merit of outstanding individual contribution of Ugandan men and women to the advancement of science and technology and its application to improving the quality of life of the people of Uganda
  2. To encourage inventiveness and innovativeness among  Ugandan women and men.
Against this background, and following the pronouncement by His Excellency, The President of the Republic of Uganda, in the year 2004, of the need to recognize scientists through Presidential awards, UNCST established the Presidential Science and Technology Excellence Awards for meritorious achievements in scientific research, technological innovation and education and training.  
Within this framework, the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) calls for nominations of outstanding Ugandans in meritorious achievements in high-level scientific research, technological innovations and scientific and technological education and training for the year 2010.
