Training Opportunity

Hands-on Training on Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Bioinformatics

Strengthening regional scientific capacity in genomic sequencing, pathogen genomics and bioinformatics.

About the Training

Applications are open for a two-week intensive Hands-on Training on Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Bioinformatics scheduled to take place from 30 November to 11 December 2026 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The training is organised by the Bio and Emerging Technology Institute (BETin), Ethiopia, in collaboration with the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) under the BIOTECHNET II Collaborative Strategic Project.

Key Information

Training Dates 30 November - 11 December 2026
Venue Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Application Deadline 3 November 2026
Eligible Countries Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti

Training Focus

The programme is designed to strengthen practical capacity in next-generation sequencing, pathogen genomics and bioinformatics. Approximately 70-80% of the course will consist of practical laboratory and computer-based exercises.

  • DNA and RNA preparation and quality assessment
  • Library preparation, indexing and pooling
  • Next-generation sequencing workflows
  • Sequencing run monitoring and quality control
  • Raw-read processing, trimming and filtering
  • Reference mapping and genome assembly
  • Variant analysis and genomic characterisation
  • Phylogenetic analysis and data visualisation
  • Foundational Linux, Python and R skills for genomic data analysis

Who Should Apply?

The programme targets scientists, researchers, laboratory professionals and early-career professionals from Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti.

Applicants should have a relevant background in areas such as molecular biology, microbiology, virology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, public health, veterinary science or related disciplines.

Eligibility: Applicants should have basic experience in nucleic-acid extraction and/or PCR-based diagnostics. Previous experience in NGS is desirable but is not mandatory.

Application Procedure

Applications must be submitted online through the ICGEB Service Gateway. Interested applicants are encouraged to review the complete call requirements and prepare all required information and supporting documentation before submitting their applications.

Applications Open

Deadline: 3 November 2026
