Webinar on Gender Equity in Research Advancement for a Sustainable S&T-Led Economy

Monday, 21st March 2022

In commemoration of International Women’s month, UNCST is organizing a webinar under the theme “GENDER EQUITY IN RESEARCH ADVANCEMENT FOR A SUSTAINABLE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY LED ECONOMY.”

This Webinar will have three objectives:
a) Assess national and global trends and efforts to address the gender gap of women in research;
b) Identify barriers to equal participation of women in science, technology, and innovation.
c) Identify potential approaches for overcoming barriers and fostering women's participation in research as well as research that addresses the unique challenges of women.

Panelists will bring an array of perspectives and insights on policies, practices, and solutions that carry potential in triggering the transformative changes needed – including in educational content and orientation, fostering cultures in support of women empowerment, creating enabling workplace environments, among others. The Webinar is envisaged to draw participation from universities and research institutions in Uganda. The panelists will be drawn from key research and women advancement institutions like, National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI), Uganda Small Scale Industrialists Association (USSIA), UN Women, and the Gender Equity in Research Alliance.

Participants, women and men alike, will be invited to share experiences on what works and what does not, but also their thoughts and recommendations on what it takes for achieving Gender Equality in STI for SDGs. Recommendations from the Webinar can inform ongoing work that UNCST is undertaking under its Gender and Equity Programs.

The Webinar will also provide an opportunity for new partnerships and collaborations in this space of gender and equity in research.
